TODAY’S SPORTSTAT — Brewers have never led NL in wins but they could this season

BY JERRY TAPP

The Milwaukee Brewers have won 55 games, tops in the National League. Did you know that since the Brew Crew joined the N.L. in 1998 they have never had the most wins in the National League at the end of the year?

In fact, since the Brewers franchise came into existence in 1969 as the Seattle Mariners, the Brewers have led the majors in wins only once — in 1982. As a member of the American League East, the Brewers won 95 games that season, tops in all of baseball. It was also the only time the Crew played in the World Series.

Here is a look at the number of times each of the National League teams has led (or tied) the league (the N.L.) in wins since the Brewers joined the N.L. in ’98.

5: St. Louis
4: Atlanta
2: Chicago Cubs, L.A. Dodgers, Philadelphia, Washington
1: Arizona, Colorado, Houston, N.Y. Mets, San Francisco
0: Cincinnati, Milwaukee, Miami, Pittsburgh, San Diego

Since 1969, the New York Yankees have had the most wins (or tied for the most wins) in the majors seven times, most of all teams. Twenty-one of the 30 MLB franchises have led or tied for the most wins in baseball at least once since ’69; nine have never done so in this time frame.

Following are the seasons teams have led or tied for the most wins in baseball since 1969.

7: New York Yankees

5: Atlanta, Oakland, St. Louis

4: Baltimore, Cincinnati

3: Cleveland

2: Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers. New York Mets, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington

1: Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Kansas City, Milwaukee, San Francisco, Seattle

0: Arizona, Colorado, Houston, Miami, Minnesota, San Diego, Tampa Bay, Texas, Toronto

Note: Through games of July 12, Boston leads the majors with 65 wins.
