Zielinski III: Mistake-prone Packers face uphill battle against Bears

By DAN ZIELINSKI III
The Green Bay Packers have yet to prove they can put together 60 minutes of quality football. In last week’s 17-14 win over Tampa Bay, Green Bay committed 10 penalties, dropped multiple passes and squandered scoring opportunities with two fourth-quarter fumbles and a Jordan Love interception in the red zone. Those mistakes nearly cost the Packers a win against a winless Buccaneers team.

Green Bay will need a cleaner performance Sunday when it hosts the Chicago Bears in a Week 5 NFC North matchup at Lambeau Field. The Packers cannot afford to repeatedly put themselves behind the chains with penalties or waste scoring opportunities against a Chicago team that has won its last two games by a combined 31 points.

The Bears accomplished that feat with two different backup quarterbacks. Tyson Bagent will look to extend that success against Green Bay.

Chicago presents a difficult matchup beyond the quarterback position. The Bears have a dominant offensive line, an adaptable playcaller, and an aggressive defense that makes life difficult for opposing offenses in crucial situations. With Kyle Monangai sidelined, veteran running back D’Andre Swift will carry a heavier workload, while Rome Odunze will look to remain a major factor in the passing game.

The Packers should have a chance to win at home against a backup quarterback, but they haven’t done enough to inspire confidence. Their offensive mistakes and inconsistent execution could prove costly against a Chicago team riding momentum.

A victory could serve as a turning point for Green Bay’s season, but the Packers must show they can put together a complete performance before earning the benefit of the doubt.

Until Green Bay eliminates its costly mistakes and demonstrates greater consistency, it is difficult to pick the Packers. Chicago has the momentum and the advantages up front to leave Lambeau Field with a divisional victory.
WHAT THE ODDSMAKERS ARE SAYING: Bears are favored by 1.5 points.
WHAT DZ IS SAYING: Bears 24, Packers 20.
