Zielinski III: Look for the Packers to get back on track
By DAN ZIELINSKI III
The Green Bay Packers need a bounce-back performance Thursday night when they host the Carolina Panthers at Lambeau Field.
After a disappointing loss to the Detroit Lions, Green Bay faces an important test as it tries to improve to 5-3 and remain in the NFC North race.
The Packers have reasons for optimism. Carolina has struggled against strong defenses and enters the matchup dealing with significant injuries on both sides of the ball. Green Bay’s defense must exploit a depleted Panthers offensive line and pressure quarterback Bryce Young.
Offensively, the Packers need to establish the running game with Josh Jacobs back in the lineup. Carolina has allowed the most rushing yards per game in the NFL, which will help Green Bay find balance and take pressure off Jordan Love. The Packers also must finish drives in the red zone and avoid costly turnovers.
My biggest concern is Green Bay’s tendency to play down to its competition. The Packers have struggled to put away teams they should beat, and last year’s loss to Carolina at Lambeau Field reminds us this matchup won’t be easy.
Still, the Panthers’ injuries and Green Bay’s defensive front should give the Packers an edge. I expect a tight game, but Green Bay will make enough late plays to secure a much-needed win.
WHAT THE ODDSMAKERS ARE SAYING: Packers are favored by 3.5 points.
WHAT DZ’S SAYING: Packers 24, Panthers 17
