For the Packers to get a W, their D has to deliver
By GERY WOELFEL
The Green Bay Packers’ mission today against the Detroit Lions can be summarized in three words:
Stop Jahmyr Gibbs.
Of course, that’s easier said than done.
Gibbs, the Lions’ sensational young running back, is a big-time play-maker and, when he goes, so go the Lions. That’s been vividly illustrated again this season in the Lions five games.
In the three games the Lions prevailed, Gibbs was virtually unstoppable. To wit:
In the Lions’ season-opening 31-30 overtime victory over the Saints, Gibbs rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns.
In the Lions’ 31-24 triumph over the Jets, Gibbs rushed for 99 yards and two touchdowns and had seven receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown.
In the Lions’ 45-21 win over the Cardinals, Gibbs went crazy again, rushing for 151 yard and a pair of touchdowns.
Now, let’s contrast that with the Lions’ two setbacks:
In the Lions 41-31 loss to the Bills, Gibbs managed a mere 52 yards and no rushing touchdowns.
In the Lions’ 32-26 defeat to the Panthers, Gibbs gained just 46 yards and one TD.
Do the math and Gibbs averaged a gaudy 135 rushing yards in the Lions’ wins and a paltry 49 yards in their losses.
The Packers know what they have to do to win.
WHAT THE ODDSMAKERS ARE SAYING: Lions by 3.5 points.
WHAT GW IS SAYING: Packers 34, Lions 27.
