Zielinski: Chiefs have eyes on the prize

  • By DAN ZIELINSKI
Super Bowl LIX is a  highly anticipated rematch between the Philadelphia Eagles and the two-time reigning champion Kansas City Chiefs.
The last time these teams met on this stage, the Chiefs edged the Eagles 38-35 in Super Bowl
LVII, and now Kansas City is aiming to make history as the first team to win three consecutive
    Super Bowls.
The Chiefs enter the game as the AFC’s No. 1 seed, while the Eagles come in as the NFC’s No. 2
seed, looking to reclaim the championship they last won in Super Bowl LII after the 2017
    season.
Patrick Mahomes, Travis KelceandAndy Reid are seeking their fourth Super Bowl title together
in just six seasons, cementing their dynasty status. Meanwhile, the Eagles hope to channel the
magic of their 2018 triumph when quarterback Nick Foles and coach Doug Pederson
orchestrated a stunning upset over the New England Patriots.
This time around, the Eagles have bolstered their roster, including the backfield, with one of the
NFL’s premier talents, Saquon Barkley. With Barkley, the Eagles boast the league’s best
offensive line and a young, dominant defense that allowed more than 20 points just once in its
final nine games. However, they face the ultimate challenge in Mahomes, the best post-Tom
Brady era quarterback who has consistently thrived on the sport’s biggest stage.
The Chiefs excel at limiting big plays, allowing only one run of 30 or more yards all season, and
their disciplined tackling could prove crucial against Philadelphia’s strong rushing attack. Jalen
Hurts has made noticeable strides in his accuracy, decision-making and poise in the pocket, but if
Kansas City forces the Eagles to rely more on his arm than their ground game, it could be a
decisive factor. Ultimately, Mahomes’ ability to elevate his team in high-pressure moments
makes it difficult to pick against him.
One interesting trend: 16 of the last 20 Super Bowl champions wore white jerseys, and the
Chiefs will be in white onceagain. The Eagles, opting for their green uniforms, hope history
repeats itself, as they wore the same color in their Super Bowl LII victory.
I can see this game going either way, and it’s bound to be a close battle. However, it’s hard to bet
against one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time in Patrick Mahomes.
    Prediction: Chiefs 27, Eagles 24
