Zielinski: Timing of Lov’s return is impaccable
By DAN ZIELINSKI
Jordan Love is back for the Packers and gives them a legitimate chance against the surprisingly undefeated Vikings today.
The Packers performed well without Love. Malik Willis stepped in at quarterback and guided the Packers to two victories. Love’s return comes at an ideal time. The Vikings are the biggest test for the Packers so far due to the Vikings’ well-rounded performances through the first three games this season.
The Vikings rank third in third-down efficiency (45.71%) and scoring (28.3 points per game) offensively. On the defensive side, the Vikings have overwhelmed opposing quarterbacks. Minnesota leads the NFL in sacks (16) and passes deflected (20) and is tied for second and third in interceptions (five) and takeaways (six), respectively. The Vikings are also second in scoring defense (10.0 per game) and are second in rushing yards allowed per game (71.3).
The Packers’ offense has thrived by using a heavy run-first offensive scheme. They also have limited their turnovers. Defensively, the Packers’ defense has forced their opponents to make mistakes, ranking first in interceptions and takeaways.
There is so much parity among these two teams early on this season. It’s a reason why the return of Love is so necessary. He has to play well and perform to the level he showed throughout the second half of last season.
This game will be tight. Sam Darnold has played exceptionally well for the Vikings, but the veteran QB has been prone to mistakes throughout his career. Can the Packers force him to make a costly turnover or two? The Packers will have to play stingy defense and a similar offensive scheme they utilized the last two weeks if they want to prevail against the Vikings.
Prediction: Packers 21, Vikings 17
